An employer with a Heart:
How to choose a company that aligns with your social values
When searching for a new job, you probably focus on the usual aspects: employment conditions, the nature of the work, growth opportunities, colleagues, and location. But how important is it to you that your employer genuinely makes a positive impact on the world?
More and more professionals find it essential that their employer is socially engaged — and rightly so. You spend a large part of your life at work. How great would it be to know that you’re not only contributing to your own goals and those of the company, but also to something bigger?
What do we mean by socially responsible employers?
These are companies that look beyond quarterly results. They take responsibility for their impact on society — whether that’s in terms of sustainability, inclusion, or supporting charitable causes. And no, it doesn’t always have to be grand or dramatic. It’s often the genuine, consistent actions that truly make a difference.
Examples of such initiatives include:
- Supporting local or international charities
- Encouraging employees to volunteer
- Tying donations to customer reviews or other business achievements
- Ongoing focus on equal opportunity, education, or health
How can you identify an employer that fits your values?
It starts with asking the right questions:
- Which charities does the company support, and why those specifically?
- Is their social involvement visible on their website, social media, or in job postings?
- Do they act because it aligns with their core values, or does it just feel like marketing?
- How are employees involved in these initiatives?
Don’t be afraid to dig deeper during job interviews. An employer who truly believes in this will speak about it with conviction.
A real-world example: How Exactpi puts Social responsibility into practice
At Exactpi, we believe everyone deserves equal opportunities — in education, at work, and in life. That belief in equal opportunity is the common thread in our social engagement. That’s why, starting in 2025, we’re supporting two charities that directly contribute to this cause.
Our multilingual label supports Save the Children, helping to create opportunities for children in vulnerable situations worldwide. Our Dutch branch supports Stichting Leergeld, an organization that helps children from families with financial difficulties fully participate at school and in society.
And we walk the talk, through concrete actions such as:
- Donating a fixed amount for every review we receive
- Raising awareness about inequality among clients and professionals
- Donating all bottle deposit refunds within Exactpi to charity
- Participating in NLdoet, where all staff volunteer to help others
- Allowing employees to spend a set number of hours per year on volunteer work
Together with our candidates, clients, and colleagues, we turn small actions into something meaningful.
What’s in it for you?
Working at a socially engaged organization gives you more than just a paycheck. You contribute to something positive, feel more connected to your work and your team, and develop yourself in terms of purpose and values.
