How to have the best year at work
The new year is a time for new beginnings, isn’t it? For those, looking for a career boost in the upcoming months, we would like to share our best proven techniques, tools, and ideas to bring focus, communication and attitude at work onto the next level.
1. Better focus
Understanding your natural energy rhythms is a game-changer. Pay attention to the times of day when you feel most energized and focused. To identify these “golden hours,” keep a journal for at least a week or two, noting how you feel throughout the day. Once you have this information, you can plan your schedule more effectively. Reserve your peak energy hours for deep, challenging, or creative tasks, and save repetitive or less demanding work for periods when your energy naturally dips.
It’s tempting to start the day by checking off easy tasks, but this approach can delay progress on critical work. Instead, prioritize the most important and challenging tasks first. At the start of the day, when your focus and energy are at their highest, you’re better equipped to tackle difficult work. By the time your energy wanes, the hardest tasks will already be behind you, making the rest of the day more manageable.
Effective organization is another key to staying on track. Find a system that suits your style and preferences. Some people prefer digital tools like Google Calendar, which offer reminders and accessibility across devices. Others thrive using traditional methods such as handwritten lists, planners, or wall calendars. You might also find value in a whiteboard or journal to brainstorm and keep track of goals. Choose a system that is easy to maintain.
Once your tasks are organized, assign a time limit to each one. Allocate specific periods for specific tasks, that prevents work from expanding unnecessarily and helps keep the day manageable. This approach ensures you stay focused and meet deadlines efficiently.
Distractions are one of the biggest obstacles that prevent focus, but they can be minimized with a few adjustments. Turn off notifications on your phone or computer, or use “Do Not Disturb” mode during focused work meetings. Set boundaries with coworkers or family members to ensure uninterrupted time for your priorities. Arrange your workspace to eliminate unnecessary distractions, whether you’re working from home or at the office.
Your productivity isn’t solely determined by what happens during work hours. The choices you make outside of work play a crucial role in sustaining focus and energy. Staying hydrated throughout the day helps maintain alertness, while balanced meals with plenty of protein provide the energy needed to tackle tasks effectively. Take regular movement breaks by setting hourly reminders to stretch or walk. A few minutes of meditation in a quiet space can reset your mind, and brief outdoor walks, even in less-than-ideal weather, can stimulate your brain and improve your mood.
2. Better communication
Mastering the art of communication and networking can open doors to new opportunities, resources, and insights. Communication is essential for career growth and building meaningful professional relationships. Here’s how to communicate and network effectively:
Be authentic.
Show genuine interest in others and build connections based on trust. Sincerely offering your help or expertise is fulfilling and rewarding. Asking questions or advice is not embarrassing.
Be thoughtful and consistent.
Prioritize reconnecting with old colleagues and friends. Follow up with new connections, nurture relationships over time and check in with those relationships. Networking is about building a long-term rapport. Offer value in return, introductions through mutual connections are warmer and more effective.
Be present online and offline.
Take time to leverage your LinkenIn profile. Keep it updated, engage with content, and join industry groups to increase visibility. Attend events, participate in conferences, webinars, and meetups. Share insights, write blog posts, or speak at events to position yourself as a thought leader in your field.
Be concise.
Yes, everybody’s busy. Teach yourself to be a present, attentive and active listener. Provide short focused answers, be straightforward: you’re a confident expert who values everyone’s time. Having an elevator pitch ready might come in incredibly handy.

3. Better attitude
Changing our attitude, however, is something we absolutely can do.
See challenges as growth
Seeing challenges as growth and learning opportunities might be the first step to a more positive professional attitude. Just imagining how powerful and inspiring knowledge expansion feels, makes us more motivated and light about uncomfortable things.
Be consistent
Talent is definitely an advantage. Consistency can turn talent into success. Show up for yourself, don’t worry about looking cool, practice, make mistakes, learn self-control, and eliminate what doesn’t matter.
Be still
Do nothing and be still to get creative. In a resting state our brain can sharpen our attention, learning capabilities and memories. Allow yourself to take a breather, reflect on things. Stepping away from a project can help to get a better overview. Let your mind wander to come up with the most unique insight.
Go deeper
Going deeper might help if you’re constantly drained and stuck. What would you do with your time, if you didn’t have to work? What would you want your daily activities to be? How many hours of human interaction, physical work or computer time would you have to like? What are you naturally good at? How would you want other people to see you? What are you dreading the most? Answering these questions may highlight your true interests and priorities.
A new year is only going to be different if you make it one. If you carry your old behaviors, patterns, habits, energies with you, the start won’t be fresh. Work towards liking the process, rather than the end goal. Become responsible about your choices. Choose your job and your routine consciously.
Embrace change
Learn, restructure, let go of things, rebuild or even take a step back.
Ultimately, it’s essential to take care of yourself, set boundaries, and create an environment that supports balance and sustainability. That way you can enhance both your productivity and your well-being, creating a more fulfilling and effective work-life experience.
We wish everyone the most exciting projects and opportunities in the upcoming year! Enjoy every minute, feel amazing and be true to yourself – that’s what we stand for at Exactpi!
